Dardenne Prairie takes its name from the actual prairie that once covered this stretch of St. Charles County. When William Clark passed through in 1808 on his way to establish Fort Osage, he described the land in his journal as a beautiful, high, rolling country covered in plains of high grass, most of it rich and fertile. Two centuries of farming, development, and construction have changed what's actually in the ground since then, so we treat that history as a reason to check, not a reason to assume.
